Thicket

I thought of deer
making their sleep here and it was as if
I had finally stumbled
out of some dream into a place
where what I’d always known to be true was true
that animals speak
that every thrush and painted moth
and every white-spotted fawn
waits for the one to come along child enough
to be let in on the secret
