Clade Song 16

Goldfinches

After a winter in the cold warehouse
we walked into the glare of warm
gold sun and through a wire fence
picked out a pair of finches flitting
between weed fluff in the carpark.
In the bright birch tree they teased
seed from old catkins that scattered
in our dark yard as we perched
on a rotten bench and chatted
away a winter lost to work.
The wrench of forgotten years
and splintered days faded
as birdsong lifted our tired minds
to sunlit birch twigs in the wind.
