Clade Song 12

Animalia through Protostomata

They have traded walls
for the mobility to stalk.

They are all predators.

They will themselves to walk,
to coordinate their killing
with networks of neurons.

Their original cells have divided,
organized a hierarchy,
layers around a cavity:

Here we see how the void gathers:
How the lacuna unfolds a left
and a right, a kidney and a gut.

We see how the arch-pore opens
mouth-first, how the organizing
hole split-creeps across
the surface of the blastula,
the nascent mass of life,

how in the ovum,
it determines ass from mouth,
anus from head,
and up from down --

how all the most
relevant moral poles

are sown in the womb.
