Clade Song 14

Eden Revisited

We had many beautiful animals: coyotes,
black squirrels, sometimes a glimpse of a
skunk, queen of the night. Bittersweet vine
grew, and tenacious knotweed,
and Tree of Heaven. We loved the flying
green jewels, the emerald ash borers.
The papery wings of the spotted lanternflies.
We scattered Wonder Bread to the ducks
in the pond, which glowed lively green with algae.
Our fingers always sticky, we were always
eating, but never quite full. English sparrows
chattered in our parking lots. Sometimes a deer
appeared in the driveway, nosed the bird
feeder. We were drawn to the trash cans
at night, competing with mother raccoons.
They hissed at us. We hissed back.
